Brazil's Ministry of Culture Undergoes Major Restructuring with Women in Leadership and New Funding Laws

Since 2023, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, under the leadership of Minister Margareth Menezes, has undergone a significant reorganization, appointing women to prominent positions, such as Naine Terena, who serves as the Director of Education and Artistic Formation. Additional appointees include Layanne Lisa, Leticia Schwarz, Raquel Dias Teixeira, Kelma Ferreira, and Desiree Tozi. On March 3, 2023, Maria Marighella took office as president of the Fundação Nacional de Artes (Funarte) in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the importance of gender equality. A Gender, Race, and Diversity Committee was formed on March 7. The ministry plans to complete the new Lei Paulo Gustavo by mid-April, with R$ 3.8 billion earmarked for cultural projects. A decree to revise the Lei Rouanet is expected by the end of March. The cultural sector employs five million individuals, contributing roughly 3% to the national GDP.
