Brasilidade Pós-Modernismo Examines Brazilian Identity Beyond Modernism at CCBB

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The exhibition Brasilidade Pós-Modernismo, curated by Tereza de Arruda, is on view at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro until November 22 before traveling to São Paulo from December 15 to March 7, 2022. Featuring 51 works from the 1960s to the present, including several new commissions, the show explores contemporary Brazilian identity through six thematic nuclei: Liberdade, Identidade, Natureza, Futuro, Estética, and Poesia. The curatorial approach creates an immersive journey with specific lighting and color for each section, moving from introspective environments to brighter spaces. Key works include Gê Viana's collage Atualizações traumáticas de Debret (2019-2021), Adriana Varejão's Azulejão (Neoconcreto), Rosana Paulino's series A geometria à brasileira chega ao paraíso tropical, and pieces by Anna Bella Geiger. The exhibition coincides with the centenary of the 1922 Semana de Arte Moderna, prompting a critical reevaluation of modernism's legacy, particularly its relationship to regionalism and appropriation. Research for the show began in 2018, with loans from private collections and artists' studios. A virtual tour is available for the Rio de Janeiro presentation.
