Brandhorst Museum Opens in Munich with 700+ Works from Twombly to Warhol
The Brandhorst Museum in Munich opened on May 21, 2009, housing the collection of Anette and Udo Brandhorst. The Bavarian state paid €48 million for the building and operational costs, securing over 700 works by Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman, and Damien Hirst as a permanent deposit from Cologne. Designed by Sauerbruch Hutton, the building features 36,000 ceramic tiles for soundproofing, oak parquet floors, and a sculptural oak staircase. The inaugural exhibition presents 180 works, including Warhol's 'Faucille et Marteau' and Twombly's 'Lepanto' series. Director Armin Zweite, formerly of Lenbachhaus and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, oversees the collection with an annual acquisition budget of €2 million.
