Brancusi Retrospective in Timișoara, European Capital of Culture

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Until January 28, 2024, Timișoara, recognized as the European Capital of Culture, is hosting a retrospective dedicated to Constantin Brâncuși at the Muzeul Național De Artă. This exhibition includes 100 works, such as sculptures, drawings, and documents, with contributions from the Centre Pompidou, Tate London, and the Guggenheim Foundation in New York. Curated by Doina Lemny, it traces Brâncuși's journey from traditional wood carvings influenced by folk art to his innovative direct carving techniques across different materials. The display also highlights his fascination with Asian culture and features his notable public monuments in Târgu Jiu: the Infinite Column, Gate of the Kiss, and Table of Silence. Brâncuși (1876-1957) famously remarked, "What is real is not the exterior but the idea, the essence of things."
