Oxford Dictionary has named 'brain rot' as the 2024 word of the year, referring to mental deterioration from excessive consumption of low-quality online content. This internet slang now defines a specific aesthetic and cultural phenomenon, encompassing terms like 'rizz', 'gyatt', 'sigma', and 'fanum tax', as well as YouTube series Skibidi Toilet and memes distorting characters like Spongebob, Shrek, and Grimace. The concept is not new; a Brooklyn Eagle article from October 8, 1899, by Julian Ralph warned of similar effects from periodicals. Unlike past moral panics, brain rot is marked by self-awareness: creators and consumers explicitly acknowledge the low quality and nonsense, embracing and amplifying it. This aesthetic continues traditions like YouTube Poop (mid-2000s), 21st Century Humor, Interdimensional Memes (2019-20), shitposting, and fried memes. A subgenre, 'sludge content', seeks hyperstimulation through TikTok videos with multiple frames, combining attention-requiring content with satisfying ASMR visuals, animated series clips (e.g., Family Guy), or endless-run gameplay (e.g., Subway Surfers). This content aims to occupy all mental space, inducing a flow state that disconnects from reality.
