Bozar's 'The Power of the Avant-Garde' Highlights Italian Art

The Bozar in Brussels, formerly the Palais des Beaux-Arts, is presenting 'The Power of the Avant-Garde. Now and Then,' a survey of avant-garde art from the late 19th century to after World War I. The exhibition emphasizes the centrality of Italian art, featuring a room where Umberto Boccioni's 'Unique Forms of Continuity in Space' is displayed opposite a large painting by Luigi Russolo, alongside works by Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, Fortunato Depero, Carlo Carrà, and Antonio Sant'Elia. The show includes historical movements such as Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter, Russian Cubo-Futurism, and the Bauhaus, with artists like James Ensor, Edvard Munch, Robert Delaunay, Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Léger, Kasimir Malevich, Natalia Goncharova, Emil Nolde, Oskar Kokoschka, Paul Klee, and Pablo Picasso. It creates 'tandems' pairing historical and contemporary artists, e.g., Olafur Eliasson with Alexander Archipenko, Marlene Dumas with Edvard Munch, Jeff Wall with Franz Kafka, David Claerbout with Piet Mondrian, Luc Tuymans with Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Sean Scully with Fernand Léger. The exhibition runs until January 22, 2017, at Bozar, Rue Ravenstein 23, 1000 Brussels.
