BOZAR exhibition Power and other things reexamines Indonesia's colonial and post-independence history through art
On 18 October 2017, BOZAR in Brussels launched the exhibition Power and other things: Indonesia & Art (1835–Now), which continued until 21 January 2018. Curated by Riksa Afiaty and Charles Esche, the showcase delves into Indonesia's struggle against colonial and post-independence power dynamics. It features a range of artworks from various eras, including 19th-century paintings depicting the arrest of Diponegoro. Notable pieces include Lidwien van de Ven's Fragments (2017), Sudjojono's triptych (1973), and Tom Nicholson's I was born in Indonesia (2017). Additionally, works reflecting on the 1965–66 anti-communist purges are represented by FX Harsono's Pilgramage to history (2013) and Agung Kurniawan's Gentayangan (2017). The title alludes to Indonesia's 1945 independence declaration by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta.
