BOZAR Brussels Exhibition Explores European Art Since the 1970s

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The BOZAR in Brussels has opened 'Somewhere in Between,' a group exhibition examining marginal phenomena in European art from the 1970s to today. The show grants carte blanche to independent spaces including Etablissement d’en face, Komplot, and La Loge—all founded in Brussels to counter the impoverishment of the local art scene—as well as curator Michal Novotný, the Kunstenbibliotheek in Berlin, and students from the Curatorial Studies course at KASK in Ghent. Novotný presents a survey of Eastern European artists who operated outside market demands, featuring works with swastikas, Stars of David, and references to Russian culture that reflect a sense of cultural confusion and non-belonging. The KASK students created a large map listing emerging creative scenes across Europe using traditional and experimental methods, involving artists such as Dan Perjovschi and Jelena Glazova. The Kunstenbibliotheek contributes an ideal collection of artist books, magazines, and independent productions, which will be donated to the joint library of KASK, School of Arts, SMAK, HISK, Design Museum Ghent, STAM, and Gentse Gidsen. The exhibition also includes installations by Abel Auer and a sportswear line presented by the Athens-based collective Life Sport, invited by Etablissement d’en face. The show runs until August 19, 2018.
