Bowery Gallery Reviews Prospective Members in Chelsea on October 11

On Monday, October 11, the Bowery Gallery will evaluate potential new members at its Chelsea venue, located at 530 West 25th Street, attracting visitors even though many galleries will be closed that day. Established in October 1969, this artist cooperative has been operating continuously from various locations, initially on the Bowery. It shares its fourth-floor premises with the Blue Mountain and Prince Street galleries. Approximately thirty-six members, including Temma Bell, John Goodrich, Barbara Goodstein, and others, contribute $140 monthly dues along with a $500 initiation fee for participation in group shows and solo exhibitions every three years. Jurors for its annual national competition have included notable figures such as Louis Finkelstein and Joan Snyder. Prospective members must submit three to five original works along with supporting documents between 4 and 6 pm, with artwork retrieval at 8 pm. Recently, Evelyn Twitchell wrapped up her exhibition, 'Drawn from Nature,' showcasing painted plaster reliefs that delve into themes of growth and form. The gallery operates entirely through its artist members, necessitating their active participation.
