Bourges 2028 cultural project scaled down due to budget cuts

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-30

Yann Galut, mayor of Bourges, announced a downsizing of the Bourges 2028 cultural project. The operational budget has been reduced to between 35 and 38 million euros, prompting 10-15% cuts in artistic projects. Pascal Keiser, general commissioner of the Bourges 2028 association, noted that the per capita budget remains three times higher than that of Marseille. Frédéric Hocquard, general delegate, specified adjustments: planned vegetalized railway stations will be reduced from five or six to three, and David Moinard's 'Soleils ligériens' installations from seven or eight to five. The Carasso foundation is contributing 400,000 euros to the latter project. Organizers insist the 'wow effect' will be preserved, citing the opening weekend planned across the entire urban area and Camille de Toledo's 'L'Internationale des rivières' and 'Soleil ligérien'.
