Botticelli's Early Masterpiece Travels from Florence to Innsbruck for Exhibition
The Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, which reopened in May after extensive renovations, has lent Sandro Botticelli's early work "Madonna with Child, John the Baptist and Two Angels" (1468) to the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck for the exhibition "Un Botticelli per Innsbruck." The painting, a small-format piece likely intended for domestic devotion, shows Botticelli's youthful style influenced by Verrocchio and Filippo Lippi while already displaying his emerging independence. Its original commission and location are unknown; it was housed at the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova until 1900 and has been at the Accademia since 1919. Director Cecilie Hollberg noted the work will dialogue with 15th- and 16th-century German and Dutch paintings of the same subject, including Albrecht Dürer, emphasizing Botticelli's international appeal and the intimate grace of his sacred subjects. The Accademia's renovation involved moving over 600 works, reorganizing the Gipsoteca (with about 450 pieces by Lorenzo Bartolini) along thematic paths leading to Michelangelo's David, and reopening the Musical Instruments Department featuring the Conservatorio "Luigi Cherubini" collection, including Stradivari and Amati instruments.
