Botero's 60 Years of Painting Retrospective Opens at CentroCentro Madrid

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition titled '60 anni di pittura. Botero a Madrid' is currently on display at Madrid's CentroCentro, showcasing the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero (b. 1932) until February 7, 2021. Curated by Botero's daughter, Lina Botero, along with Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz Fisac, it comprises approximately seventy oil paintings sourced from European collections, organized into seven thematic categories, such as Latin American childhood, religious humor, oversized still lifes, and reinterpretations of art history. Due to the pandemic, Botero, who divides his time between Pietrasanta and Montecarlo, was unable to attend. Madrid previously celebrated his work with a retrospective in 1987 and an outdoor sculpture exhibition in 1994. The collection features pieces from the late 1980s onward, though some notable works are missing. An essay by Mario Vargas Llosa is included in the catalog.
