Boston Symphony Cracks Down on Red Flower Protests at Tanglewood

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has instructed staff at Tanglewood to warn audience members carrying red flowers—a symbol of support for departing music director Andris Nelsons—that distributing materials is prohibited, and to alert public safety if the rule is breached. The red flower campaign began after Nelsons' forced exit was announced this spring, with musicians and patrons wearing cloth boutonnieres on stage. The BSO confirmed the policy, calling it standard practice. Retired bassoonist Richard Ranti, a 37-year BSO veteran, was confronted by an usher after handing a flower to a patron during intermission on July 20. Ranti called the policy "ridiculous." Tanglewood senior vice president P. Eric Krauss said a staff member faced "aggressive behavior" while enforcing the rule. The Red Flower Campaign, founded by George Whiting and Quinn MacKenzie, has spent roughly $10,000 on merchandise and a Stockbridge storefront. MacKenzie ordered several thousand additional flowers after depleting half of an initial 3,400. Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra fellows have also worn roses, independently of BSO musicians. Businesses like Bizen in Great Barrington offer free red flowers to patrons. The BSO compared the flower policy to its ban on unauthorized photography during concerts.
