Boston Dynamics' Spot dances with Mick Jagger to Rolling Stones' Start Me Up

Boston Dynamics, in collaboration with Mercury Studios and Polydor Records, released a video titled Spot Me Up featuring the robot Spot dancing alongside Mick Jagger to the Rolling Stones' track Start Me Up. The video has garnered over 2 million views. Marc Raibert, founder and president of Boston Dynamics, stated that the company was approached after their dance videos were seen, and they were asked to create something to support the 40th anniversary of the album. The goal was to imitate the Stones' moves. This follows the success of Atlas, Spot's humanoid counterpart, which debuted in December 2020 in a Christmas clip that initiated a series of dance videos. Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert as a spin-off from MIT, initially known for the BigDog project for the US Army and the DI-Guy human simulation software. The company's robots are inspired by natural movements of humans and animals, enabling them to navigate diverse environments. Spot resembles a dog, while Atlas is a 1.5m, 80kg humanoid with 3D-printed parts and a compact hydraulic system, capable of jumps and somersaults. The previous video Do You Love Me? featuring Atlas achieved 35 million views, sparking debates about its authenticity. The company revealed the behind-the-scenes process using choreography editing software similar to Adobe After Effects to pre-program and refine complex movement sequences.
