Bosco Sodi's Residency and Exhibition at Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, Venice

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From February 28 to March 7, 2022, Mexican artist Bosco Sodi (b. 1970, Mexico City) will hold a residency on the ground floor of Palazzo Vendramin Grimani in Venice, transforming the space into a studio. Visitors on guided tours can observe his process: applying layers of sawdust, cellulose paste, glue, and pigment onto canvases, which will then be left to dry exposed to the lagoon atmosphere. Once dried, the works will move to the piano nobile for the exhibition "Bosco Sodi a Palazzo Vendramin Grimani. What Goes Around Comes Around," curated by Daniela Ferretti and Dakin Hart, running from April 23 to November 27, 2022. The show coincides with the 2022 Venice Biennale. It will feature 195 miniature clay spheres—one for each existing nation-state—made from Oaxaca earth and fired in an improvised beach kiln. Visitors can rearrange the globes, and at the exhibition's close, Venetian residents may take them. The project aims to create an alternative exchange circuit echoing historic trade between Europe and the Americas. The Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro, active since 2019, restored the 16th-century palace overlooking the Grand Canal, opening it periodically since May 2021 with paintings from Venetian family collections, private collections, and commissioned photographs by Patrick Tourneboeuf documenting the building's evolution.
