Bosch's Triptych of the Hermits Returns to Venice After Restoration

exhibition · 2026-05-05

On May 18, 2016, the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice reinstalled Jheronimus Bosch's Triptych of the Hermits in its permanent collection, marking its first Italian exhibition after a comprehensive restoration. The work, owned by the institution, was restored in Venice by a team of Italian and Dutch experts. It was previously shown in the Dutch exhibition 'Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of a Genius'. The Triptych of Saint Liberata and Visions of the Hereafter, also owned by the Accademia and similarly restored, are currently on display at the Prado in Madrid but will return to Venice in mid-September to be reunited with the Triptych of the Hermits for the first time post-restoration. The Accademia reported a 15% increase in visitors and a 20% rise in revenue in the first four months of 2016 compared to 2015, attributed to the Bosch exhibition. The upcoming September display is expected to sustain this positive trend.
