Bosch's Masterpieces Unite at Prado Including Rediscovered Fragment

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Prado Museum in Madrid opens a major Hieronymus Bosch exhibition on May 31, 2016, running until September 25. The show brings together all six Bosch works from the museum's collection, including The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Adoration of the Magi, and the Haywain Triptych, plus the Christ Carrying the Cross from El Escorial and Saint John the Baptist from the Fundación Lázaro Galdiano. A recently rediscovered fragment of the Temptation of Saint Anthony, found in storage at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City and subject to attribution debate, is also displayed. The exhibition follows earlier celebrations in February at the Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch, Bosch's hometown, for the 500th anniversary of his death. The Prado's concentration of Bosch works stems from King Philip II's keen interest in the artist, which enriched Spain's royal collection later inherited by the Prado and Patrimonio Nacional.
