Bortolo Sacchi: The Forgotten Venetian Painter of Unease

artist · 2026-04-27

Bortolo Sacchi (Venice, 1892 – Bassano del Grappa, 1978) was a Venetian painter whose work blended metaphysical and fantastic elements with a Nordic sensibility, shaped by his studies in Germany. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Hugo Habermann (1909–1913), he worked as both painter and ceramist. Returning to Italy, he focused on painting, influenced by Felice Casorati and Gino Rossi, and studied Renaissance masters like Mantegna, Bellini, and Tintoretto. A naval officer in WWI, he dedicated himself to art after the war. His 1920 self-portrait "Autoritratto in veste di santo" shows an ecstatic, ironic expression. He debuted at the Venice Biennale in 1920 with "Autoritratto" and "Le ortiche." King Vittorio Emanuele III bought his 1924 work "Il Cieco." His masterpiece "La straniera" (1928) depicts a mixed-race woman in Venice, echoing Bellini and Carpaccio. Sacchi reached maturity in the 1930s with works like "Le ballerine," "Nudo allo specchio," and "Sul ponte." He participated in the Quadriennale three times (1931, 1939, 1943), exhibited 11 works at the 1935 Biennale retrospective, and won the Quadriga prize in 1939 for "La Fatica del Legionario." After WWII, he retired to Bassano del Grappa, where he died in 1978. Forgotten for decades, the Museo Civico di Bassano held a retrospective in 2000 curated by Mario Guderzo.
