Borondo's Monumental Glass Installation Debuts at Altrove Festival in Catanzaro

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

Spanish artist Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid, 1989) has created the first work for the fourth edition of Altrove Festival – Centro Arte Contemporaneo, one of Europe's most important public art festivals, officially launching on July 20 in Catanzaro. Already visible on the roof of the imposing Complesso del San Giovanni is "Aria," an installation comprising over 185 glass sheets serigraphed in just four days by the organization, with 73 figures hand-finished by the artist. The work depicts a naked, proud woman raising an empty flag to the sky, calling attention to landscapes often devastated by human immorality. It ranks among the most imposing public artworks executed in serigraphy, an ancient printing technique whose name derives from the Latin "seri" (silk). The piece emerged from a lengthy creative process where Borondo painted and scratched 36 glass matrix plates by hand, transformed into printing frames through technical, logistical, and creative collaboration with studio 56fili and Studio Superfluo in Rome.
