Bordeaux's former submarine base becomes world's largest digital art center

Opened in June 2020 by Culturespaces, an organization established by Bruno Monnier, the Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux is recognized as the largest digital art center worldwide, housed in a former German U-boat bunker from WWII. Covering an area of 42,000 square meters, it features two exhibitions running until January 2024: 'Dalí, l'enigma senza fine' and a showcase dedicated to Antoni Gaudí. The Dalí exhibit, designed by Gianfranco Iannuzzi, delves into his artistic journey through Cubism, Surrealism, and Dadaism, accompanied by Pink Floyd's music. The Gaudí program highlights UNESCO heritage sites. This bunker, constructed between September 1941 and May 1943, withstood a bombing raid on May 17, 1943. Culturespaces oversees 11 locations and is expanding internationally, with new centers in Dortmund (2023) and Hamburg set for 2024.
