Book Reveals Bergamo's Urban Renewal Through Historical Photography
A new book, 'Città Alta 1926-1938. Il Piano di Risanamento e Luigi Angelini' edited by Valentina Raimondo, explores the urban reorganization of Bergamo's historic upper town through archival photographs. Published by Nomos Edizioni in Italian-English, it is the first volume in a series dedicated to historical photography, part of a project by SIAD Fondazione Testini. The images come from the Archivio famiglia Angelini and the Fondo Piano di Risanamento of the Raccolta Domenico Lucchetti. The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of engineer Luigi Angelini's death, who masterminded the sanitation plan. The book is organized into three themes, documenting the poor hygienic conditions that prompted the plan, the debates among architects, and Angelini's scientific approach. Photographs capture pre- and post-intervention views, including everyday life and landmarks like the Sant'Agata prison.
