Book Recovers Forgotten Women Architects from History
In October 2018, Zaida Muxí Martínez released 'Mujer, Casas y Ciudades. Más Allá del Umbral,' a work that encapsulates fourteen years of research and features over seventy women spanning from the 16th century to the 1980s. Muxí, a professor at the University of Barcelona and co-director of 'La vivienda del siglo XXI,' co-founded Col.lectiu Punt6, inspired by the blog 'Un día | una arquitecta.' The Spanish-language book, published by DPR-Barcelona, critiques women's marginalization in historiography, spotlighting figures such as Lilly Reich and Charlotte Perriand, and referencing 19th-century writings by Catharine Beecher and Christine Frederick. Muxí stresses the importance of visibility, asserting, 'We must work together on visibility and recognition.' This release aligns with activism from Voice of Women and RebelArchitette, who conducted a flash mob on May 25, 2018.
