Book explores art as therapy for autism spectrum disorders
A new book titled "Autismo: un futuro nell'arte" examines the therapeutic potential of art for individuals on the autism spectrum. Authored by Paola Binetti, a senator and president of the scientific committee of the cultural association "Medicina e Frontiere," along with her collaborators, the publication delves into how art—understood as a composite language of lights, colors, sounds, forms, gestures, and words—can offer alternative communication channels for those with autism. Binetti, who holds degrees in medicine and surgery with a specialization in child neuropsychiatry, emphasizes that autism should be viewed as a spectrum of conditions characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction. She argues that art provides a means for children with autism to express emotions and organize their inner world, with painting workshops and ateliers serving as high-density communicative spaces where an adult observes, appreciates, and reinforces the child's message. The book situates this approach within a broader Italian interest in the intersection of art and neuroscience, referencing projects by Cosimo Veneziano, Numero Cromatico, Raffaele Quida, and Fondazione Volume!. Binetti, a parliamentarian since 2006, connects her work on child behavior with political action supporting life and family. The book was released in October 2019.
