Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' Streams Surge During Solar Eclipse

During the UK's largest partial solar eclipse in nearly three decades on 12 August, Bonnie Tyler's 1983 hit 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' experienced a significant surge in streams. Spotify reported a 94% increase in UK streams and a 14% rise globally for the song on that day. The Welsh singer, born Gaynor Hopkins, died on 8 July at age 75 in Portugal after emergency intestinal surgery. Her funeral is scheduled for 17 August at St Mary's Church in Swansea, with a procession through Mumbles on 15 August. Musician Mal Pope, a friend of Tyler, observed children in Mumbles singing along to the song during the eclipse. Tyler's career included hits like 'Holding Out for a Hero' and representing the UK at Eurovision 2013. She was awarded an MBE in 2023. Her music video for 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' has surpassed 1.2 billion YouTube views and over a billion Spotify streams. Spotify has paid out over $1.4 million for streams of Tyler's catalogue in 2025. A McVitie's Jaffa Cakes advert featuring Tyler also resurfaced ahead of the eclipse.
