This aristocratic collection originated with Sir Walter Rockcliffe Farquhar (1810–1900), a senior partner at Herries, Farquhar & Co., which pioneered circular notes and financed British aristocracy. The collection passed through generations, including Ernest Farquhar (1853–1930) of Whiteway House, Devon, who inherited it from his brother Alfred. Alfred had received it from their father, Sir Harvie Morton Farquhar, who inherited it from Sir Walter. Whiteway House held the collection for three generations, except during World War I when the house was repurposed. The auction features treasures with ties to Napoleon III, highlighting the family's banking legacy and aristocratic connections.
