Bong Joon-ho's Parasite Wins Palme d'Or at Cannes 2019
The 72nd Cannes Film Festival concluded with Bong Joon-ho's Parasite winning the Palme d'Or, awarded by a jury led by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film, a genre-blending social satire about class divide, was praised for its originality and narrative twists. Other major awards included the Grand Prix to Mati Diop for Atlantique, Best Director to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for Le Jeune Ahmed, and Best Actor to Antonio Banderas for Dolor y Gloria. Best Actress went to Emily Beecham for Little Joe, and the Screenplay prize to Céline Sciamma for Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu. The festival was noted for its strong selection, including films by Pedro Almodóvar, Terrence Malick, Xavier Dolan, Ken Loach, and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, tensions arose over press access, with journalists facing restricted working conditions and secret screenings. Parasite will be distributed in Italy by Academy Two.
