Bonalumi's Theatrical Scenography Unveiled in Turin Exhibition

Mazzoleni gallery in Turin presents a rare focus on Agostino Bonalumi's theatrical scenography from the 1970s, curated by Marco Scotini for the tenth anniversary of the artist's death. The exhibition, titled 'Teatro delle Forze,' runs until an unspecified date and features reconstructions of Bonalumi's sets and costumes for two ballets: 'Partita' (1970, Teatro Romano di Verona, music by Goffredo Petrassi, choreography by Susanna Egri) and 'Rot' (1972, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, music by Domenico Guaccero, choreography by Amedeo Amodio). Alongside large-scale plastic works, the show includes original documents and sketches from the Archivio Bonalumi in Milan, the Fondazione Cini in Venice, the Archivio Storico del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and the Fondazione Egri per la Danza in Turin. Scotini notes that Bonalumi's scenography synthesizes his shift from 'pittura-oggetto' (as defined by Gillo Dorfles) to environmental sculpture, exemplified by works like 'Blu abitabile' and 'Struttura modulare bianca.' The exhibition aims to reveal lesser-known aspects of Bonalumi's practice, challenging the notion that everything about the artist has been said.
