Bolzano Exhibition Explores Winter Sports Through 20th-Century Art
Palazzo Mercantile in Bolzano hosts 'Winterspiele der Kunst. Sport invernali nell’arte', an exhibition examining winter sports through the works of Paul Flora, Alfons Walde, and Italian Futurists. Curated by Stefano Consolati and Carl Krauss for Museumverein Bozen, the show argues that ice and snow served as formal laboratories translating movement into visual language throughout the 20th century. The core section focuses on Paul Flora (1922–2009), whose ink drawings depict athletes as metaphysical figures floating in visual silence, far removed from contemporary technological gigantism. Alfons Walde (1891–1958) presents dense, sculptural white masses and stark contrasts, defining alpine aesthetics alongside Max von Esterle. The avant-garde section features Fortunato Depero and Ivanhoe Gambini, whose 'Sciatore al Salto' deforms the body into a single trajectory. The exhibition draws from private collections, notably Leitner of Vipiteno and Michael Seeber, making rarely seen works accessible. Walter Landi, president of the Società del Museo, notes these works blend sport's free spirit with regional identity. The show runs during Olympic hype, restoring snow as a contemplative space.
