Boltanski, Kalman and Krawczyk stage 'Fosse' in Centre Pompidou garage
Christian Boltanski, Jean Kalman, and Franck Krawczyk have transformed the underground garage of the Centre Georges-Pompidou into a theatrical space for their new work 'Fosse', running until January 12, 2020. Commissioned by the Opéra-Comique and produced in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, the piece follows the trio's established rules: the audience sits within the performance, free to move and 'interfere'; the show has no clear beginning or end, with the soundtrack starting before doors open and continuing after they close; and the narrative is a web of stories rather than a single plot, aiming to open viewers' imaginations. The trio—visual artist Boltanski, lighting designer Kalman, and composer Krawczyk—have collaborated since 2001, previously staging works in unusual venues like an abandoned warehouse (Point P, 2003), the kitchen and service staircase of the Théâtre du Châtelet (2004-2005), and the construction site of the Opéra-Comique (2016). Their approach blends music, design, and contemporary art into a 'total theatre' that erases physical and mental barriers.
