Bologna's WunderBo videogame merges cultural heritage with digital innovation

digital · 2026-05-04

The Italian city of Bologna has launched WunderBo, a videogame developed by digital agency Melazeta to promote its historical and cultural heritage. The project was initiated through a public tender in 2018 co-financed by the municipality and the European Horizon 2020 project ROCK (Regeneration and Optimization of Cultural heritage in creative and Knowledge cities), which involves 32 European partners led by the University of Bologna. WunderBo was presented on May 30 in Bologna during the event "Prove tecniche di trasmissione! Partecipazione attiva, Patrimonio culturale, Potenzialità digitali," where a demo version was available. The game draws narrative inspiration from the Museo Civico Medievale and the Sistema Museale di Ateneo di Bologna. The initiative reflects the Italian Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code (D.Lgs. n. 42/2004), which promotes knowledge of cultural assets through innovative means. Other digital tools showcased at the event include the Cultural Gems app for hidden city heritage and the Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.
