Bologna's Cultural Revolution: Arte Fiera at a Crossroads

Bologna is pursuing a radical overhaul of Arte Fiera, integrating it into a year-round contemporary art strategy for the city. Assessor Matteo Lepore revealed that Lorenzo Balbi, director of MAMbo, was tasked by the city to draft a proposal for the fair's revival, but he will not become its director due to an exclusive contract with Bologna's museum system. The city aims to transform Arte Fiera from a purely commercial event into a cultural driver, with a new managerial director to be appointed within weeks. The project includes support for young artists, internationalization, and collaboration with private entities like MAST, Golinelli Campus, and Collezione Cirulli. A potential alliance with Milan's miart is being explored to specialize the two fairs. Without a bold new format, Arte Fiera risks closure within 2-3 years. The city is also considering public investment for the first year.
