Bologna dissolves autonomous museum institution after decade

institutional · 2026-04-27

The city of Bologna has dissolved Istituzione Bologna Musei, the autonomous institution founded in 2012 that managed 13 museum sites including MAMbo, Museo Morandi, and Museo Civico Archeologico. Mayor Matteo Lepore announced the decision, stating the bureaucratic structure was straining the municipal organization. The museums will return under direct city management, similar to a previous reorganization of libraries. Lepore plans 85 new hires in culture between 2021 and 2022, increased funding including three million euros for the Morandi museum and 20 million from the government for the Memory Hub, and new partnerships with foundations and private entities.
