Bojana Piškur Lecture on Socialist Museums Now Online

publication · 2026-04-22

On 18 February 2015, Bojana Piškur, a curator at Moderna galerija in Ljubljana, presented a TrAIN Open Lecture titled 'Museum of the Workers' at Central Saint Martins in London, with Lucy Steeds as the introducer. The lecture explored the role of socialist museums in the former Yugoslavia and other socialist nations, discussing the decline of socialist humanist concepts post-1990s and their recent resurgence. Piškur raised questions about which progressive socialist cultural policies and museum frameworks could benefit modern institutions, what lessons from the past can be utilized in a neoliberal context, and how these concepts can be implemented. The event was part of the Exhibition Histories project by Afterall, in collaboration with Bard College's Center for Curatorial Studies. The lecture video is now accessible online.
