Bojan Šarcevic at IAC Villeurbanne: Geometry Subverted

At the Institut d'art contemporain de Villeurbanne, Bojan Šarcevic's solo exhibition (September 21 – November 18, 2012) presents works that navigate between geometric and organic, structural and ornamental, abstraction and figuration. Drawing on constructivism and minimalism, his pieces subtly subvert these historical avant-gardes. Two onyx monoliths, She (2010) and He (2011), greet visitors at the entrance; their geometric forms and smooth surfaces evoke minimalism, but their titles contradict the movement's anti-anthropomorphic stance. The colored veins in the stone are read as sensory equivalents of bodily intensities. Spirit of Inclusiveness (2002) appears constructivist with its rectilinear, projecting and recessed volume, yet its ornamental metal cladding undermines that rigor. The four films Only After Dark (2007) reference works by Vladimir Tatline or Naum Gabo, turning geometric sculptures into elements of mysterious landscapes, thereby challenging Russian avant-garde abstraction. The exhibition features multiple works by Šarcevic, all characterized by such tensions.
