Boeckl and Josephsohn in dialogue at Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum in Vienna presents "Herbert Boeckl – Hans Josephsohn. Figural Archetypes," an exhibition pairing paintings by Austrian Herbert Boeckl (1894–1966) with sculptures by Swiss Hans Josephsohn (1920–2012). Although the two artists never met, their works reveal parallel approaches to form, corporeality, and materiality. The juxtaposition highlights surprising analogies in formal aesthetics and phenomenology, despite differing historical, geographical, and cultural contexts. Both artists remained committed to representationalism and the human figure, resisting the turn to abstraction prevalent since the 1950s. The exhibition addresses existential and universal questions, opening new associative spaces.
