Bodø, European Capital of Culture 2024: A Guide to Summer Exhibitions

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

Bodø, the first city above the Arctic Circle to be named European Capital of Culture, is hosting 1,000 events (600 in the city, 400 in the surrounding region) throughout 2024. The NOUA Foundation, founded by artist Marianne Bjørnmyr and photographer Dan Mariner, presents Steffi Klenz's solo show 'Alluring Maquette' (summer 2024), inspired by the Japanese Villa Hyuga by Bruno Taut. The Bodøgaard Gallery hosts 'Towards the North,' a retrospective of Peder Balke, the first Norwegian painter to depict the Arctic, and the permanent collection of Oscar Bodøgaard (managed by his son Harald), which also includes 19th-century Russian Orthodox icons and an unorganized Norwegian ethnographic collection. In Kjerringøy, the Karl Erik Harr Museum features 'Polarhavet' (summer 2024), with a large painting of the 1890 Battle of Trollfjord. The Kjerringøy Land Art Biennale (9th edition, founded 2007) includes Italian artist Raffaele Vitto's 'N.9.' The Artscape Nordland Skjerstad park (created 1992) has 36 sculptures by artists including Anish Kapoor, Dan Graham, Luciano Fabro, Tony Cragg, and Kristján Gudmundsson. The Sami Museum (Bådåddjo Musea) in Bodø hosts 'Giving the right shape' (until August 11) with 50 Sami artisans. The Adelsteen Normann Museum, open only 1-2 days a week, displays works by the 19th-century Norwegian landscape painter. The Adde Zetterquist Gallery, inside the Nordland Nasjonalparksenter, features Swedish artist Per Adde (b. 1926) and his wife Kajsa Zetterquist.
