Bodø 2024 European Capital of Culture Program Preview
Bodø, designated European Capital of Culture for 2024 alongside Tartu (Estonia) and Bad Ischl (Austria), has launched a vast program aimed at long-term urban and cultural development. General Director Henrik Sand Dagfinrud reveals that the city's airport will relocate one kilometer away, opening up a huge area for urban growth over the next 50 years, countering regional demographic decline. The program focuses on the extreme contrasts of natural light and Arctic environment, with seasonal changes influencing artistic projects. In 2024, a new national art museum and a civic museum will open. Key exhibitions include a seasonal show by artist-run association NOUA, co-funded by Creative Europe; a temporary Sami museum at the civic museum; a craft and art exhibition featuring objects never before displayed in the region; a summer show on Peder Balke at Bodøgaard; and an outsider art exhibition at Bodø Kunstforening in July, supported by Trastad Samlinger experts. Sami identity is central, addressing historical assimilation policies and ongoing human rights violations. International collaborations include the Lofoten International Arts Festival (LIAF) and ties with the Estonian National Museum in Tartu. Long-term projects like Arts of Democracy and Bodø's membership in the International Cities of Refuge Network will outlast 2024.
