Boccioni's 'Adalgisa Maffi' joins Pinacoteca del Divisionismo in Tortona

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Umberto Boccioni's 1909 portrait 'Adalgisa Maffi' has been donated to the Pinacoteca del Divisionismo in Tortona, Italy. The painting, previously held by the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, was part of the collection of Professor Giuseppe Mattioli. Proceeds from the transfer will fund oncological research and a three-year fellowship for a young researcher. The work depicts Adalgisa Maffi, a charismatic figure in early 20th-century Milan who founded a school of acting and diction. The painting's history includes ownership by Boccioni's mother, entrepreneur Enrico Bachi, and a period of concealment during fascist racial persecutions. The acquisition enriches the museum's collection, which includes 145 works by artists such as Segantini, Previati, Morbelli, Longoni, and Balla. The donation was facilitated by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona, whose president Pier Luigi Rognoni highlighted the collaboration with Mario Negri. Giuseppe Remuzzi, director of the Mario Negri Institute, expressed gratitude for the support of scientific research.
