Bob Wolfenson Retrospective Opens at Espaço Cultural Porto Seguro with Over 200 Portraits

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Fashion photographer Bob Wolfenson presents his retrospective "Bob Wolfenson: Retratos" at Espaço Cultural Porto Seguro in São Paulo, featuring over 200 images spanning 45 years of work. The exhibition runs from August 23 to December 9, 2018. Born in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, Wolfenson began his career at age 16 as an office boy at Editora Abril's Estúdio Abril, then led by Chico Albuquerque. At 20, he co-founded a studio with Dudu Tresca and Leonardo Costa before moving to New York to work in Bill King's studio, which launched careers like Twiggy and Cindy Crawford. Returning to Brazil, he quickly photographed for Brazilian Vogue. His 2009 book "Cartas a um jovem fotógrafo" reflects his critical perspective. The retrospective, curated by Rodrigo Villela, includes a 1973 photo of José Celso Martinez Corrêa and a recent one of Sebastião Salgado, selected from over a thousand images. Coincidentally, Irving Penn—who never replied to Wolfenson's job inquiry letter—also has a retrospective "Irving Penn: centenário" at IMS São Paulo on Avenida Paulista.
