Bob Dylan's Deep Focus paintings at Frost Art Museum reimagine movie stills of American life

Bob Dylan's 2021 painting series Deep Focus is currently exhibited at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami until 17 April 2022. The works depict urban American scenes populated with diverse human figures, contrasting with his 2016 series The Beaten Path that featured deserted landscapes. Dylan creates these paintings using movie stills as source material, manipulating and reinterpreting cinematic images to construct new narratives. The series includes scenes of card games, jazz bands, boxing matches, and solitary figures in bars and diners, often emphasizing isolation. Specific paintings like Sugar Bowl transform stills from the 1981 film The Loveless, removing characters to create new meaning. Another work, Frank and Buddy, reimagines the historic Zito's bakery in New York's Village, elevating the building and adding fictional elements. Dylan's engagement with film dates to his youth in Hibbing, where cinema connected him to broader cultural worlds. The artist has described Deep Focus as exploring "the different predicaments that people find themselves in," creating what he calls "a screenplay for our own situations." The exhibition Retrospectrum: Bob Dylan features these works alongside earlier series including Drawn Blank and The Beaten Path.
