architecture-design · 2026-04-22

On August 3, 2011, the BMW Guggenheim Lab was inaugurated in First Park, located in New York City's East Village. This project investigates themes of sustainability and adaptability within a 2,200-square-foot carbon fiber installation designed by Atelier Bow-Wow, which can host 300 individuals. The structure boasts an open-air ground floor and an upper level furnished with seating and lighting. Curators Maria Nicanor and David van der Leer collaborated with BMW and the NYC Department of Parks to revitalize a previously unused lot. The initial cycle, titled Confronting Comfort, offers 100 complimentary programs, including the game Urbanology. Following its New York stint, the lab will move to Berlin and Mumbai, with results displayed at the Guggenheim in New York. Events remain free and available online until October 16, 2011.
