Blues Brothers: The Myth of Jake and Elwood, from SNL to Cult Film

The Blues Brothers, the iconic duo created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, originated on the set of Saturday Night Live (SNL), where their friendship and shared love for blues music led to the formation of a band that would become a cultural phenomenon. The characters Jake and Elwood Blues were inspired by the Walsh brothers of the Downchild Blues Band from Toronto. The band's first public appearance was on SNL on April 22, 1978, performing "Hey Bartender." Their debut album, "Briefcase Full of Blues," was certified double platinum. The 1980 film "The Blues Brothers," directed by John Landis, became a cult classic despite initial competition from "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back." The film featured cameos by Carrie Fisher, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, and a young Steven Spielberg. After Belushi's death in 1982, the band continued with new albums and tours. A sequel, "Blues Brothers 2000," was presented out of competition at the 51st Cannes Film Festival in 1998 but was less successful. In the 2000s, the band performed at the Sanremo Music Festival with Andrea Mingardi and collaborated with Zucchero on the music video for "Per colpa di chi." Today, only two original members remain: guitarist Steve Cropper and saxophonist Lou Marini.
