Blizzard installs Diablo IV fresco in French deconsecrated church

digital · 2026-04-27

Blizzard Entertainment commissioned a 49-meter painted installation in the Chapelle des Jésuites in Cambrai, a deconsecrated 17th-century church classified as a historical monument in 1920. The work, led by American painter Adam Miller, features demonic characters from the video game Diablo IV replacing traditional sacred imagery on the vault and apse. The promotional video for Diablo IV was directed by Henry Hobson and narrated by Charles Dance. The installation is part of a broader campaign for the game's release on June 6, 2023, amid controversies including a lawsuit by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing over sexual harassment and discrimination, which led to the departure of director Luis Barriga and designer Jesse McCree. Players can participate in an open beta in March for a chance to be depicted in the fresco as heroes battling Lilith, the main antagonist.
