Blight Rayner and Snøhetta Unveil Glasshouse Theater with Instrument-Inspired Design

In Brisbane, Australia, the newly inaugurated Glasshouse Theater at the Queensland Performing Arts Center (QPAC) showcases a striking glass exterior and an acoustically optimized interior that mimics a musical instrument. This 1,500-seat venue, crafted by Blight Rayner Architecture in collaboration with Snøhetta, emerged victorious in an international design competition held in May 2019. It honors the heritage-listed QPAC, originally conceived by Robin Gibson in the 1970s. The facade, featuring both curved and flat glass panels, was engineered by seele with precision tolerances of ±3 millimeters. Inside, timber battens and adjustable acoustic panels enhance sound quality. The design draws inspiration from an Aboriginal poem, with contributions from consultants like Arup and Schuler Shook. The theater is situated adjacent to South Bank.
