Blickmaschinen Exhibition Juxtaposes Historical Optical Devices with Contemporary Art at CAAC Seville
From September 2009 to January 2010, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville hosted the Blickmaschinen exhibition, featuring more than 200 historical optical instruments from the collection of Werner Nekes, alongside modern artworks. Among the historical artifacts were laterna magica, camerae obscurae, kaleidoscopes, and daguerreotypes. Contemporary creators such as Robert Smithson, Dennis Adams, Kara Walker, and Giulio Paolini engaged with the concept of the "objective eye." The exhibition examined the connection between art and technology, contrasting historical and modern viewpoints on vision, representation methods, linear perspective, and the nature of images, referencing thinkers like Alois Riegl, Jean-Paul Sartre, and John Berger. Interactive elements redefined the conventional museum experience, highlighting the relationship between art history and visual culture.
