Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Firmware Adds Phase Detect AF and Object Tracking

Blackmagic Design has released firmware version 10.2.2 for its Cinema Camera 6K, adding phase detect autofocus (PDAF) and object detection tracking modes. The camera, launched in September 2023 with a full-frame 6K sensor and Leica L-Mount, originally featured only contrast detection autofocus. The update enables continuous autofocus with face and object detection, autofocus transition speeds, and assignable shortcut keys. It also adds Blackmagic Cloud Streaming, four-channel audio recording, and pre-recording. The firmware is free, but the camera's price has risen to $2,989, up from its launch price of $2,600 and a 2024 low of $1,575. The update brings the camera closer to competing with models from Panasonic, Sony, Canon, and Nikon, though it remains more expensive than some rivals. The addition of PDAF suggests the sensor, likely from Sony, always had the hardware capability but was previously locked by software.
