Black Lives Matter Leads ArtReview's 2020 Power 100, Marking First Movement to Top List
In the 2020 edition of the ArtReview Power 100, Black Lives Matter claims the top position, a first for any movement in the history of the list. This year's ranking, the 19th, illustrates the impact of COVID-19 and social justice initiatives on the art world’s power dynamics. Following closely is the Indonesian collective ruangrupa in second place, with academics Felwine Sarr and Bénédicte Savoy taking third. The #MeToo movement occupies the fourth spot, while philosopher Fred Moten is ranked fifth. This edition introduces 46 newcomers among 39 fresh entries, the highest number in 15 years. Noteworthy new figures include Darren Walker (11), Saidiya Hartman (9), and Legacy Russell (100). Collectives such as Forensic Architecture and Feral Atlas are ranked 14th and 15th, respectively. The list prioritizes concepts over specific artworks and was curated by approximately 20 individuals from both inside and outside the art community.
