Black History Month Exhibitions in Cali: Weaving and Forgetting
In March and April 2021, the Centro Cultural Colombo Americano in Cali, Colombia, presented two notable exhibitions for Black History Month. Diego Luis Mañunga Balanta's 'Tejer y destejer: cuerpos con historia' (Weaving and Unweaving: Bodies With a History) features traditional weaving techniques using banana leaf veins and hemp to create soft chairs. On the other hand, Laura Campaz Minota's 'Prohibido olvidar' (Forgetting is Forbidden) merges text and color into archival photographs. Both artists aim to confront the marginalization of Black bodies in history, emphasizing the links to territory and memory within Colombia's African descendant communities. Additionally, there was a virtual tour available for the exhibitions. Text and photos were provided by Nicolás Vizcaíno Sánchez.
