Björk's Victimhood Video Directed by Icelandic Artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir
Björk has released a new single and music video titled Victimhood, from her tenth studio album Fossora. The video was co-directed by Icelandic painter Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and filmmaker Pierre-Alain Giraud. It premiered on September 1, 2023 during a performance at Altice Arena in Lisbon as part of the Cornucopia Tour, which will reach Italy on September 12 at Mediolanum Forum in Milan and September 23 at Unipol Arena in Bologna. The video animates subjects and scenarios from Friðriksdóttir's oil paintings, depicting a nocturnal creature's metaphorical journey toward self-awareness. The song features the Murmuri bass clarinet sextet and draws on Jungian archetypes to explore sacrifice and self-pity. Björk stated that the video's themes relate to women's roles in emotional labor and catharsis. The collaboration stems from a long friendship between the artists, with Friðriksdóttir's work also connecting to Björk's mother's artistic use of blue.
