Bjarke Ingels' Twist opens at Kistefos Museum in Norway

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The Kistefos-Museet near Jevnaker, Norway, has added a new building called The Twist, designed by Bjarke Ingels. The 1,000-square-meter structure spans the Randselva river with a 90-degree twist, featuring large windows reflecting surrounding forests and aluminum panels matching the gray sky. Ingels describes it as a 'habitable sculpture' and an element of the landscape. The project was funded by businessman and collector Christen Sveaas, descendant of the paper mill founders. The museum also sees a directorship change from Egil Eide (ten years) to Birgitte Espeland. The Twist is Ingels' first project in Norway, followed by CopenHill in Copenhagen, a ski slope atop a waste incinerator. For the opening and the sculpture park's 20th anniversary, three new works by Elmgreen & Dragset, Giuseppe Penone, and Tony Oursler were added, joining artists like Benglis, Kassen, Bjørlo, Kapoor, Cragg, and Botero. Inside The Twist, the exhibition 'Hodgkin and Creed – Inside Out' curated by Guy Robertson runs until November 17, 2019, pairing Howard Hodgkin's semi-figurative abstraction with Martin Creed's conceptual installations.
